Viticulture
Dr. Loosen Mosel Riesling is sourced from multiple vineyards with slate being the main soil type. We strive for healthy fruit and a minimum of 100 days of hang time. We have an experienced vineyard team and long-term contracts with growers to ensure that our quality standards are met. Of course, there is a lot of hard work in the vineyards, but there is also a social awareness and the winery where this Riesling is bottled is certified sustainable by Ecostep, and it is bottled in a lightweight bottle using vegan friendly winemaking techniques.
Vinification
Sometimes climate change surprises you, as after six consecutive hot and very dry years, 2021 proved to be a stark contrast to this trend because it was considerably cooler and moister. This contrast led to challenges in the vineyard that were much different to the previous years. We have been doing this so long that usually weeks before the harvest we have a pretty good idea what sort of potential the vintage will have. This time we were denied that glimpse into the future as we had to wait a long time before we had an idea how the vintage would turn out. A lot of work hard was done in the vineyards, but it was all worth it. 2021 should be a great vintage if you love the characteristic Mosel Riesling acidity. This Dr. Loosen L Riesling is intended to be a depictive representation of the general style of the vintage, so you can expect it to be an elegant wine with just enough ripeness to balance out the acidity of the vintage. A good way of putting it is that the wine should taste as elegant and lovely as the package we put it in. Prost!
