2021 Dr Loosen Erdener Red Slate Riesling Dry

Dr. Loosen

Mosel

A well-balanced dry Riesling from estate vineyards that show the distinctively forceful minerality of red slate soils.

Dr. Loosen is one of the most highly acclaimed wine estates in the world. In the family for over 200 years, Ernst “Erni” Loosen assumed ownership in 1988 and quickly propelled the reputation of Dr. Loosen into the highest echelon of Germany’s finest producers. With a focus on the old, ungrafted vines the estate owns in some of the Mosel valley’s best-rated vineyards, the wines clearly express their cool-climate origins through environmentally sensitive viticulture, strict harvest selection and gentle cellar practices.

Viticulture

Erden is a small village that has some of the most picturesque vineyards in all the Middle Mosel associated with its name. Erden has vineyards that are known for iron-infused, red slate soil that helps produce wines that are muscular and complex, with intense minerality on the finish. This Dr. Loosen Erdener Red Slate Riesling Dry is an excellent ambassador for the wines of this village and their distinct style.

Red Slate Soil
The Mosel Valley’s iron-rich red slate is less common than the more prolific blue slate found throughout Germany’s Middle Mosel. Red slate is found mostly in the villages of Erden, Ürzig and Kinheim.
