2020 Quinta do Portal Reserva Red

Quinta do Portal

Douro

Concentrated ruby colour with aromas of ripe black fruit and some floral notes in perfect harmony with some toast from the oak. Expressive on the palate, it has lovely acidity and a pleasant fruity and toasty aftertaste. The final is long and complex and it will develop further with more time in bottle.

Viticulture

The 2019/2020 agricultural year in the Douro was marked by very hot and dry weather conditions. However we had high rainfall in April that supplied enough water to the subsoil so that the vines could cope with the very hot and dry conditions registered in July and August. July was the hottest year since 1931! Due to the faster vegetative cycle we started again the ”vindima” in August. It was the 4t time we had to start picking in August in the last 6 years and the 6th time since the first time, back in 2009. Touriga Franca was very affected and it was the variety that needed more attention. We finally had to decide to pick earlier because it was getting too fragile due to the heat. It was a challenging “vindima”, especially to understand and read the maturation of the white varieties, but we managed to pick with good acidity and avoid concentration of sugar. The reds came in with an impressive concentration of colour, giving hope for an outstanding year! But after malolactic fermentation they shut down a bit too much, bringing some disappointment regarding the initial perspective. However after passing their first winter, they seem to be getting back on track! On the contrary, the whites that showed very closed at first, appear now with vibrant, rich and seductive aromas. In short it’s fair to say that we have very good wines on the way, coming from another atypical year (as they all seem to be lately!).

Vinification
