2020 Karl Johner Pinot Gris

Weingut Karl H. Johner

Baden

Nice clear scent of ripe pears, melons and a hint of citrus. The scent hasn't been this intense in a long time. It was 20% in used large oak barrels. Wood aromas are completely in the background and barely perceptible. As the vintage has 14% vol. we left it on the yeast for an extra long time to integrate everything perfectly. The wine is very full-bodied, with power and a lot of mellowness thanks to the yeast. The acidity is pleasant and everything together results in a beautiful, powerful harmony with a very good drinking flow.

Viticulture

Our Pinot Gris grapes come from different vineyards. The soil types are loess and weathered volcanic rock. We cultivate our vineyards strictly according to the motto "Quality is created in the vineyard". We invest a lot of time in manual foliage work and measures to regulate the yield. The 2020 vintage was an early and very hot vintage with a very early harvest. In fear of a lack of staff, we defoliated the vines very heavily by machine after flowering. At the same time, the yield was severely decimated. When harvesting, we only wanted to harvest ripe fruit flavours, so the alcohol levels are slightly higher than normal. The result, with its beautiful aromas, surprised us enormously.

Vinification

. The grapes were extremely healthy and no sorting was necessary this year. In the cellar, the grapes were gently pressed as whole bunches. Fermented and matured mainly in stainless steel, 20% in used oak barrels. With a nice long storage on the yeast, the first batch was bottled in January 2022.

Fermented and matured: 80% stainless steel tanks and 20% oak barrels.
