2019 Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben

Dr. Loosen

Mosel

The Erdener Treppchen vineyard produces wines that are muscular and complex, with an intense mineral finish. Grosses Gewächs (GG) simply means “great growth” and is the designation for an estate’s best dry wine from a Grosse Lage (grand cru) vineyard. From a parcel of extremely old vines (“alte Reben”), this wine was kept on the full lees for a year before bottling. The extended maturation time allows the wine to develop greater texture and a natural harmony.

Viticulture

The 2019 vintage was characterized by an unprecedented heatwave that struck Europe in August with temperatures over 35°C. All in all the weather conditions were challenging in 2019. On the Mosel there was not much rain in the time from January until September. Fortunately, we had smaller rain events almost every time when the vines were on the verge to drought stress.

Vinification

Fermented with indigenous yeasts in traditional 1,000-liter Fuder casks; matured on the full lees for 12 months; no bâtonnage
