2014 Portal LBV Port

Quinta do Portal

Porto and Douro

Beautiful ruby colour, this wine shows an excellent fragrance of red fruit with some notes of spice and cocoa. Big on the palate but with round tannins, a complex bouquet and a harmonious and long finish. A young and robust LBV.

Viticulture

Hand picked and transported in small cases. Harvested between the 2nd and 13th September.

Fall and Winter were atypical with both rainfall and temperatures well above average. Budburst occurred between the second and third weeks of March and the vegetative cycle started quickly, due to the availability of water in the subsoil and the high temperatures.

Flowering came in May. There was some “desavinho” (no transformation of the flower into fruit) in the higher ground vineyards. In this period there was an higher than average disease pressure. In the Summer we had moderate temperatures with high rainfall in July that favoured the optimal development of the grapes and exuberance of the foliar surface. This led to great expectations towards the overall quality of the vintage. However in September there was persistent rainfall that deteriorated the quality of some varieties by not allowing their correct maturation.

Vinification

Maceration in both stainless steel “Lagar” and closed vats at 24-26ºC. Aged for four years in seasoned barrels. Bottled unfiltered. Bottled in September 2019 with natural cork. LBV is a wine produced in years of excellent quality and aged longer in wood than Vintage Port. It's bottled four years after the harvest. Our LBVs are bottled unfiltered so decanting is recommended, as during the course of the years the wine will throw some sediment.

Recommendation

To enjoy with your favourite red berries ice cream, soft cheeses, or on its own at the end of your dinner.
