Rudolf Fürst 2018 Vintage - Jancis Robinson Tasting notes

The latest reviews from Jancis Robinson on the 2018 Vintage from Fürst

RUDOLF FÜRST, ASTHEIMER CHARDONNAY TROCKEN 2018 FRANKEN
17.5 Points - 12.5%, Drink 2021 - 2030

“I remember the old advertising jingle of ‘nuts, whole hazelnuts’, which was written for a far more menial product but is totally appropriate for the leading aroma in the fragrance of the Astheimer Chardonnay. It’s presented in such an attractive manner that you have to use all your willpower to turn your olfactory attention towards the other fragrant assets of stone fruit, fine spice and smoky nuances. On the taste, you get to appreciate the skilful handling of oak-ageing, which does not smother the palate in roasted notes and ostentatious tannins but tempts with caramel biscuits. These accept the fruit of peach as well as salty minerality, and acidity that reminds me of crunchy sorrel, as equal partners in flavour. And, of course, the hazelnuts.” - Michael Schmidt - View on JancisRobinson.com here

RUDOLF FÜRST, R CHARDONNAY TROCKEN 2018 FRANKEN
18.5 Points - 13%, Drink 2022 - 2035

“As far as I am aware the Chardonnay R is based on a special selection of grapes from the Astheimer Karthäuser and, if anything, on the nose, the roasted and smoky notes demand a bit more attention than in the Astheimer Ortswein (village wine), and are complemented by an intricate flinty notion, with hazelnuts content to be a part but not a leader of the fragrant team. On the palate, the flavour impresses with concentration – grapefruit, lemon and lime in unison with a compact mineral substance and sweet caramel. Juicy acidity allows first advances, while youthful tannins take care of contours.” - Michael Schmidt - View on JancisRobinson.com here

RUDOLF FÜRST, KLINGENBERGER SPÄTBURGUNDER TROCKEN 2018 FRANKEN
16.5 Points - 13%, Drink 2022 - 2027

“A quite pronounced fragrance combines notes of red-fruit pudding with vegetal woodland aromas, complemented by gentle notions of herbs and almond. On the palate the tannins are still quite furry and add a tactile astringency to the fruit of dark berries and sloe. Notions of dark bitter chocolate and a hint of cedar spice lead to a savoury finish. Almost a bruiser.” - Michael Schmidt - View on JancisRobinson.com here

RUDOLF FÜRST, BÜRGSTADTER SPÄTBURGUNDER TROCKEN 2018 FRANKEN
17 Points - 13%, Drink 2020 - 2025

“A simple village Pinot this is not, as demonstrated by the diversity of fragrance. Aromas of morello cherry, plum, forest floor, autumnal leaves and tomato plant get together in a fascinatingly seductive fragrance. On the palate, the Bürgstadter seems a little lighter and fresher than its Klingenberger colleague, with fresh cherry, fleshy sloe and juicy acidity. The tannins are well behaved but also add a little kick at the end, together with piquant notions of pepper and tobacco.” - Michael Schmidt - View on JancisRobinson.com here

RUDOLF FÜRST, BÜRGSTADTER BERG SPÄTBURGUNDER TROCKEN 2018 FRANKEN
17.5 Points - 13%, Drink 2021 - 2027

“The Bürgstadter Berg impresses with a complex composition of all things woodland, from leaves to earth and undergrowth, but also shows its fruitier side with cherry and dark plum. White pepper and cedar spice round off the fragrance. On the palate, finely grained tannins allow plenty of room for a juicy expression of sweet fruit, with spicy and smoky nuances adding a certain piquancy to the finish. Elegant and surprisingly mellow for a baby Spätburgunder.” - Michael Schmidt - View on JancisRobinson.com here

RUDOLF FÜRST, R FRÜHBURGUNDER TROCKEN 2018 FRANKEN
17.5 Points - 13.5%, Drink 2021 - 2027

“An assertive nose combines a woodland fragrance including leafy and earthy notes with the scent of ripe red cherry and just a hint of compost. On the palate, the flavour starts off with a taste of crunchy green pepper before it gets a little sweeter with notions of cherry and cocoa. The tannins are still a little dusty, but not really fierce. Peppery finish with just a hint of cedar spice.” - Michael Schmidt - View on JancisRobinson.com here
