It was not plain sailing for many. The start of the year saw a lot of rainfall and later on extreme heat in some regions made careful canopy management a necessity, however in most regions the heat and heat stress on the vines was not as intense as in 2018 and the rain had some benefits as it replenished ground water stocks which held the vines in good stead though the dry period in the summer.
Overall It was quite a classic year but with much lower yields in nearly all the regions. The challenges created by the weather made careful planning and quick decisions extremely important especially during harvest time. The diligence and hard work paid off, resulting in beautifully balanced wines with longevity.
