Erni Loosen said, “Two thousand twenty-four was not an easy year. There was rain, dryness, and even though it was a warm vintage, ripeness was not a given.” Here, as everywhere, moderate alcohols define the collection. Electric Kabinetts and sensational Spätlesen very clearly take the crown this year. Picking at Dr. Loosen started with base wine for Pinot Noir Sekt on October 3. Pre-harvests of Riesling began in the last week of September and finished in the first week of November. Loosen also showed his tradition releases from the estate’s vast reserves, where he lays down 50-60,000 bottles each year. These mature releases show just how enduring Riesling is, how effortlessly and gracefully it ages. The Kabinett Tradition is from 2012, the Spätlese from 1993—a dream—and an Auslese from 2008 is simply superb. Anyone who holds Riesling in good conditions need not worry, these wines just last.

The 2019 Riesling Erdener Prälat Grosses Gewächs Réserve is lifted with earthiness and crushed dandelion leaf on the nose. All is framed with dried lemon zest, rising with clarity and drive. The palate is smooth, rounded and shimmering with gorgeously red-cheeked peach fruit that is fresh and bright, despite the evolution of the wine. This has a beautiful richness at its core and, on the finish, an inherent citric coolness that is straight and endless. The aftertaste is sensational, encompassing, long and intense. The 2024 Riesling Erdener Prälat Auslese Goldkapsel was made from botrytized fruit but that is not immediately evident on the nose, where fresh fruit still shines with citrus. Its sweetness is like candied tangerine, with intensity rather than aroma that expresses the botrytis here. Dr. Loosen Riesling Satyricus 2024 – 88-90 Points
The 2024 Riesling Satyricus was made as a lighter style of dry Riesling, picked in the Wehlener Klosterberg. It spent a year in barrel and is wonderfully flinty and scented on the nose. The 2024 Riesling Graacher is from vines planted in 1989 in the Graacher Himmelreich in the Abtsberg parcel. The palate is immensely juicy, bright and is full of zest. Tender apricot shimmers in the distance, colored with stone and lemon. The palate is slender, smooth and shimmering with that citric elegance. The 2024 is really fine. Supple dried fruit notes come with slightly ethereal overtones of dried yarrow crushed with apple syrup. Slight pepperiness adds verve on the nose. Superb concentration adds dried lemon, lime rind and earthy notes. This is bold, concentrated and full-on, with wonderful energy and intent. The 2012 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Tradition Kabinett stayed for two years on gross lees and was released with ten years of bottle age. Supple tenderness on the nose holds lemon, slate, white currant and dried lemon rind aromas. The palate has all the vivid lightness of Kabinett, with wonderful smoothness, litheness and citric vivaciousness notwithstanding a citric intensity and a completely disarming freshness that defies age.
