2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese
95+
The gold-capsuled 2024 Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese (AP 61 25)) is deep and intense on the slightly honeyed nose. Full-bodied, rich and generous on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, vital and finessed, stimulatingly saline and savory Prälat with fine grip and mineral tension. This is a gorgeous long-distance runner.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten GG Alte Reben
(94-95)
The 2024 Ürziger Würzgarten GG Alte Reben is a subtle, playful Riesling that captivates with its delicate, elegant nose, clear fruit and fine savoriness. Very salty and delicate on the palate, with juicy fruit and crystal-clear acidity, this is possibly Loosen's finest grand cru of the vintage.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese
94
The 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is deep, precise and flinty on the generous and savory nose. Full-bodied yet light and fresh on the palate, this is a tight, fresh, saline and highly stimulating Auslese with a long and mouthwatering finish.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett
93
The 2024 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett is clear and super aromatic on the nose yet elegant and subtle, with fine, flinty minerality and saltiness as well as herbal notes. Round and elegant on the palate, it is almost a little harmless in terms of tension build-up but juicy and balanced, with emphasis, grip and precision. This has good length. It's almost too complex for a Kabinett but doubtlessly an excellent Riesling, regardless of its classification.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese
93
The 2024 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese is deep and flinty on the serious and complex nose that indicates brilliant fruit with rocky notes. Racy on the first attack, this is a mouth-filling, round, savory, vital and grippy Spätlese with a savory, saline, stimulatingly bitter and zesty finish. It is still very young but promising.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese
93
The 2024 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese is clear and precise yet still discreet on the somewhat muted yet fresh and promising nose that is most of all savory and flinty. Finely racy on the first attack, this is a savory and zesty, finely grippy and juicy Spätlese with a mouth-filling, grippy, nicely lemon-bitter and energetic finish. This is very promising.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese
93
The 2024 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese is precise, fresh and lemony on the saline and crunchy nose. Lush and savory on the palate, this is an intense, juicy, well-balanced, generous, elegant and stimulatingly savory Auslese with a long and intense finish.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese
93
The 2024 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese is intense and honeyed on the clear, elegant and savory nose. Full-bodied, savory and saline on the palate, this is a grippy and digestible Riesling with a nice bite and good tension.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Kinheimer Rosenberg GG
(92-93)
The 2024 Kinheimer Rosenberg GG opens with a deep, dense, elegant and balanced nose of concentrated fruit and salt. The Rosenberg already seems very accessible thanks to its good development and fine, initially mild acidity, which becomes finely racy on the finish, which is a bit hard and sharp, and the aftertaste, marrying with salt and sulfur. The wine is tightly knit and firmly structured and develops good length. It has potential.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Lösnicher Försterlay GG
(92-93)
The 2024 Lösnicher Försterlay GG impresses with a deep, dense and complex yet subtle nose of fine, ripe fruit and citrus freshness. The wine displays a juicy fullness combined with a savory character but still seems quite sharp and citrusy, though it shows potential. The 2024 has good substance and concentration yet needs more time to settle.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett
92
The 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett combines ripe, concentrated and spicy fruit with flinty rock notes and aromas of redcurrant, pink grapefruit and salt. It is rich in substance. On the palate, it is elegant, fresh, savory and enormously salty, so that all the sweetness is offset, or rather, is no longer noticeable. This Kabinett is juicy as well as light-footed, crisp and piquant. This is a great Kabinett from the famous Wehlener Sonnenuhr.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Graacher Domprobst GG
(91-92)
The 2024 Graacher Domprobst GG has a rather reductive, cool, smoky, fresh nose, which is quite typical for this steep site just behind the village. Dense, lively and salty on the palate, it shows plenty of substance and expression. The finish is pure, dry and grippy, promising and complex overall, yet at this stage, it's still somewhat sharp from the sulfur.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben
(91-93)
The 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben opens with very ripe fruit and delicate slate and herbal notes. It is delicately sapid and salty on the round, elegant palate, which is characterized by ripe, almost sweet and juicy fruit but does not yet reveal great finesse, instead offering power and tannins as well as citrus acidity in the finish. The wine has substance but needs time.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
92
The 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is somewhat dull on the fruity, elegant nose and lacks brilliant clarity. On the palate, the Spätlese is round, rich and sweet but also spicy and racy. It is sweet and juicy yet also stimulating on the finish without reaching great depth or complexity.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Bernkasteler Johannisbrünnchen GG
(91-92)
The 2024 Bernkasteler Johannisbrünnchen GG has a dense but restrained nose with citrus notes. Round, sweetish and with a savory character, this is a straightforward Riesling from a site where ice wines used to be produced regularly. I have yet to taste a truly great GG from here.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben
(91-92)
The nose of the 2024 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben reveals slightly ripe, light fruit with a dense, deep substance and stony, salty notes as well as a slight reduction. On the palate, the Treppchen is juicy, dense and full-bodied, almost creamy and even quite substantial, although it (still?) lacks the finesse of the best 2024s. The tannins in the finish, which are still somewhat drying due to the sulfur, match the substance of the old vines' complexity. This is not yet enchanting.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett
91+
The 2024 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett opens with a generous and intense bouquet of fully ripe, fleshy and well-concentrated fruits intertwined with finely weathered blue slate aromas. Even pink (or overripe) fruit aromas appear but are balanced by the characteristic flinty slate aromas. Savory and enormously vital on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dense, intense and saline as well as crisp and seriously structured Kabinett from the famous Treppchen. It has a mouthwatering and crisp finish and is very promising though still very young.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Graacher Himmelreich GG
(90-92)
The 2024 Graacher Himmelreich GG jumps out of the glass with ripe, dense fruit and is round and juicy on the palate, quite sweet but also savory and spicy, with citrus zest and salt, but it still lacks great expression or complex length.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Bernkasteler Lay GG
(90-92)
The 2024 Bernkasteler Lay GG displays delicate wood spice to ripe, juicy fruit and remains indifferent. The body has a creamy fullness on the palate with piquant acidity, citrus notes and notes from smaller or newer oak. The finish is elegant and salty, but it also displays still quite prominent citrus fruit.
2024 Weingut Dr. Loosen Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett
88
The 2024 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett displays a primarily fruity, almost musty, highly aromatic nose with notes of ripe pears and crushed stone. Round and juicy on the palate, it is still quite prominent and sweet but appealing in its lightness and mineral bite. This is a stimulating, youthful Kabinett with generous fruit and juiciness.
Zach. Bergweiler-Prüm Erben
Ernst Loosen's surprise coup from last year is entering its second vintage. From 2019, Team Loosen has once again selected three Rieslings from the small Sonnenuhr parcel with vines over 130 years old: a dry grand cru (or GG), an early-harvest Kabinett and an Auslese selected parallel to the Grosses Gewächs. Although analytically sweeter than last year's 2018 vintage, the latter is still relatively moderate in residual sugar compared to modern Mosel Auslesen. Many Kabinett Rieslings today are bottled with 53 grams per liter, while Auslesen often have twice as much sugar. In any case, the 2019 Auslese is a great Mosel Riesling of traditional style (more on this in last year's reviews). It is aged in wooden barrels for two years and then matures for three years in the bottle before being marketed exclusively through Place de Bordeaux, like all three wines from this family-owned and restored boutique winery in Wehlen. And believe it or not, the 2019 Auslese doesn't taste sweet despite its 54 grams of unfermented sugar.
The dry GG Riesling from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr is also impressive in its combination of concentration and generous intensity with complexity and lively yet firm tension, whereas the Kabinett is a prime example of a classic Mosel Riesling: light, delicate, mouthwatering and irresistible. It's a wine to drink, not a wine you have to dance around first.
2019 Dr Loosen – Zacharias Bergweiler-Prüm Erben Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Vieilles Vignes
97
The vivid yellow-colored 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Vieilles Vignes opens with a fascinatingly intense yet refined and elegant, saline and flinty bouquet of ripe and fresh pineapples, Burundi bananas and hints of caramel. Round and lush on the palate, this is a light yet intense and supple, remarkably refined and saline Riesling with fine, crystalline acidity (9.1 grams per liter) and no palatable sweetness. This is a highly gastronomic Auslese from ancient vines. It is still young but already irresistible. 9.5% stated alcohol and 53 grams per liter of residual sugar.
2019 Dr Loosen – Zacharias Bergweiler-Prüm Erben Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG Vieilles Vignes
96
From a single fuder and aged for 24 months on the full lees, the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG Vieilles Vignes offers a generous, very intense and lemony bouquet of concentrated Riesling berries. Very elegant and fresh on the palate, this is a full-bodied, textural and vivacious, tight and mineral, firmly structured Sonnenuhr with a long, complex, saline, very stimulating finish. It is incredibly young and full of expression.
2019 Dr Loosen – Zacharias Bergweiler-Prüm Erben Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett Vieilles Vignes
93
The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett Vieilles Vignes is clear and refined on the elegant, aromatic, beautifully fruity as well as floral and flinty nose. Light, lush and savory, with dense, elegant fruit, this is a highly stimulating, saline and mouth-watering Kabinett with good grip and tension on the finish. There is a lot of drama in this wine that comes in with 9.5% stated alcohol plus an unsweet 28.5 grams per liter of residual sugar.
